Man Sentenced in Shooting of Valley Brook Police Officer

An Oklahoma City man who shot a Valley Brook police officer on New Year's Day pleaded guilty to six charges against him related to the shooting.

Cory Hartsell, 27, is sentenced to 30 years in prison for conviction of three counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, unauthorized use of a vehicle, being a felon in possession of a firearm, and trafficking in methamphetamine. 

Around 5:40 p.m. on New Year's Day, Officer Brian Southerland of the Valley Brook police department pulled over a Chevy Avalanche near Eastern and Interstate 240. As the police officer walked back to his patrol vehicle, Hartsell fired at him. The gunshot struck a main artery in Office Southerland's leg, seriously injuring him. 

Hartsell fled the scene, abandoning the suspect vehicle. Some 30 hours later, police found him and apprehended him during a traffic stop.

At the time of his arrest, Hartsell was on parole for grand larceny and meth possession. His parole was set to expire a week after the shooting. 

According to charging documents, Hartsell's charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon were in violation of 21 O.S. 645, 652, 653, and 681. Those specific statutes include the following crimes:

 

 

Following the shooting, Southerland underwent emergency surgery. He has spent the last several months recovering from the injury, enduring multiple surgeries and months of physical therapy. He his now back on duty.
